Special motor vehicle tax is an excise tax, which means that the taxable person is required to pay it to the national budget for and on behalf of the end user.
This special tax is assessed on the basis of the selling/market price of the motor vehicle, the carbon dioxide (CO2) emission level expressed in grams per kilometer, the engine displacement in cubic centimeters, and the exhaust gas emission level.
If a vehicle is purchased through a lease, the end user, also being the party required to pay SMVT, is the lessee. OTP Leasing charges SMVT to the lessee through the monthly lease installments.
